ABSTRACT

--- Introduction: Depression is a frequent mental disorder, characterized by the presence of sadness, loss of interest for pleasure, feelings of guilt or lack of self-esteem, sleep or appetite disorders, suicidal thoughts, among others. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressants such as fluoxetine are useful in the treatment of this and other mental disorders. However, they present significant adverse reactions, so there is a need to find alternative treatments for this disease, such as Hypericum perforatum (St. John's wort) a plant with a hard stem and yellow flowers that has been used since old traditional medicine as a treatment for depression. Method: Twenty-five male Wistar rats weighing 150-250 g was used to administer controlled doses of H. perforatum or fluoxetine, respectively. Antidepressant activity was assessed by forced swimming test (FST), which was compared using the ANOVA test. Results: Were obtained with statistically non-significant differences in the immobility time between the groups. Conclusions: The expected undesired effects of fluoxetine were observed in the behavior of the rats of this group, while the rats with H. perforatum showed a more alert and active behavior, and the results obtained by the PNF allow to conclude that H. perforatum has an antidepressant activity comparable to the effect achieved by fluoxetine, at the doses studied.
