ABSTRACT

--- Introduction: Central nervous system (CNS) tumors represent the second most common malignant neoplasm in Mexico. The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies CNS tumors in 4 degrees according to patient survival. The objective of this study is to present epidemiological data and the experience from the Pediatric Hospital "Dr. Silvestre Frenk Freund ”of the 21st Century National Medical Center in Mexico City regarding these neoplasms. Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional ambilective study of primary intracranial neoplasms of the CNS that have been studied in the Pathological Anatomy department of the aforementioned hospital from 1989 to 2019 was carried out. Cases of incomplete diagnosis or with disuse classification were reassessed by 2 pediatric pathologists and 1 neuropathologist blindly. Results: After reviewing 47,143 reports of histopathological studies, a total of 1,093 cases of intracranial neoplasms were found; 34 cases were excluded, leaving 1,059 cases included in the study. Conclusions: CNS tumors in pediatrics are entities of great epidemiological interest due to the difficulty of their diagnosis and correct classification. Until January 2020, this study presents the largest series in Mexico regarding CNS tumors in pediatrics. It is essential that the areas of Pathological Anatomy have tools of molecular biology, in addition to that we urge the second and third level hospitals to permanently preserve the paraffin blocks and lamellae.
