A CDA-based analysis of international English textbooks applied in Iranian private English language institutes

Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2013, Vol 5, Issue 12

Abstract

The present research was to analyze four internationally-distributed English textbooks based on critical discourse methodology proposed by Fairclough’s 1989 model. In this model, three dimensions of meaning namely content, relations and subject positions are analyzed to interpret their experiential, relational and expressive values respectively. Findings of the research in all of the textbooks and among all the relations showed that friends 42.7, customer-service provider 11.3 and monologues 14.9 are outstandingly significant in case of relational values. Regarding subject positions, societal 82.05, Occupational 14.35 and commercial 3.58 rank the first, the second and the third places respectively in all the ELT textbooks analyzed and are significantly noticeable in case of expressive values. In all the textbooks except English Results, in case of content, interpersonal, introspective 30.1 takes the first position, which shows the emphasis the books put on interpersonal experiential value. Regarding gender positioning, the interesting fact is that male-female 53.4 takes the first gender position in all the ELT textbooks, while male-male 15.8, and female-female 13.3 take the second and the third places respectively. A critical discourse analysis of the textbooks signified a neo-liberalism, neoclassical ideology chosen by internationally English textbooks writers which may affect ESL learners’ attitudes towards social problems such as religious and ethnic minorities, social inequality, power dominance, culture diversity, gender differentiation and colonialism.
