A Clinical Study To Compare Percutaneous Pinsfixation Of Supracondylar Fractures In Children

Abstract

Supracondylar fracture of humerus is one of the most common fractures in the first decade of life. Closed reduction and percutaneous pin fixation is most widely accepted treatment method for displaced supracondylar fracture but controversy persists regarding the optimal pin fixation technique. The purpose of this study was to compare the stability and risk of ulnar nerve injury treated by lateral entry pin fixation with that of medial and lateral pin fixation for Gartland type III supracondylar fracture. A total of 60 patients between the age three to twelve years were operated by different methods (percutaneous pinning) and followed up to 6 months. There was no significant difference between two groups in terms of stability, duration of bone healing and loss of reduction but group II (Medial and lateral pin fixation) had three ulnarnerve injuries. Isolated lateral pinning has a low iatrogenic ulnar nerve injury and gives good functional outcome.
