A comparative analysis of the artificial occlusal surface formation, conventional Gysi’s method and Biofunctional Prosthetic System in complete dentures

Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2017, Vol 67, Issue 3

Abstract

Introduction. Nowadays, the conventional method of setting teeth developed by Alfred Gysi and Biofunctional Prosthetic System (BPS) have been successfully applied. Both methods are significantly different, but their common intention is to achieve a balance in the morphological and functional masticatory system. Aim of the study. To compare geometrical features of the artificial occlusal surface formation in complete dentures whose teeth were set using two methods, Gysi’s conventional and biofunctional.Material and method. An analysis was performed on 224 complete dentures. One set was made in accordance with the setting of artificial teeth by Gysi’s method. The other set of dentures was made by using BPS. The 3D-MicroScribeTM G2X system was applied to measure the distribution of 20 occlusion-active points. The use of the MonsOpt 2.0 software allowed for assessing and analysing the geometry of the occlusal surface in accordance with Monson’s Spherical Concept of Occlusion. The following were calculated: adjustment of the generated optimal radius sphere Ropt to a 4-inch Monson’s sphere Rs = 101.6 mm and also the length of the dental arch on the right side (DLP) and on the left side (DLL),the index of sphere depth on the right side (WGSP) and on the left side (WGSL) and the index of occlusion curve (IKZ). Results. In Gysi’s method Ropt was about 1.5 mm longer than in BPS. The length of the dental arch in BPS achieved a value of 85.8 mm, whereas 84.58 mm using Gysi’s method. In both methods slightly higher WGSL relative to WGSP was obtained. IKZ in BPS was 0.015 higher compared to that obtained with Gysi’s method (1.201). Conclusions. Occlusal surface in the BPS method is better adjusted to Monson’s sphere than in the conventional method. Using both methods the length symmetry of the dental arch and depth of occlusion curve is bilateral. Gysi’s method and BPS are comparable in the parametric quality evaluation of their performance.
