A comparative cytology and cell block study of malignant effusions
Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2019, Vol 10, Issue 2
Abstract
The accurate identification of cells as either malignant or reactive mesothelial cells is a diagnostic problem in conventional cytological smears. Cell block technique increases the cellularity and gives better morphological details, has many advantages over conventional cytology in improving the sensitivity of diagnosis. Hence the present study was undertaken to emphasise the role of cell-block technique over conventional smears in effusions. A total of 180 effusion specimens were evaluated by simultaneous use of smear and cellblock technique from November 2011 to October 2013 in the Department of pathology, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital,Warangal. Out of 180 samples malignant effusions were noted in 40 cases by cellblock technique and all were metastatic lesions. Additional diagnostic yield for malignancy was 15% more by cellblock method when compared to conventional smears. Sensitivity of malignant lesions was significantly increased.
