Study of various hematological disorders by bone marrow aspiration and trephine biopsy

Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2018, Vol 6, Issue 2

Abstract

Bone marrow examination is useful for diagnosis of hematological and non-hematological disoders by bone marrow aspiration and trephine biopsy. Out of 52 cases, trephine biopsy was requested in 30 cases and other 22 cases were referred to higher centre. In 30 cases comparative utility of both bone marrow aspiration and biopsy was evaluated. Out of 30 cases, in 25 cases (83.3%) findings of aspiration and trephine biopsies were comparable and in 5 cases (16.7%) findings of trephine biopsies were different from aspiration. Trephine biopsy is more helpful for the assessment of cellularity, extent and pattern of tumor infiltration, while aspiration is ideal for cytological details of hematopoietic cells. In recent era, bone marrow aspiration and bone marrow trephine biopsy are considered to be complementary to each other.
