Soft tissue tumors: A clinicopathological assessment
Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2018, Vol 8, Issue 2
Abstract
Soft tissue tumors are rare, heterogeneous group of mesenchymal neoplasms and constitute fewer than 1% of all cancers. The ratio of benign to malignant soft tissue tumor is 100:1. In United States sarcomas are diagnosed as 0.8% of invasive malignancies per annum and cause 2% of cancer deaths. The main objectives are to study the clinic pathological correlation of soft tissue tumors and their histopathological pattern for the classification and typing of soft tissue tumors. A retrospective study done for a period of one year starting from July 2015 to June 2016 at Yenepoya medical college, Mangalore, a tertiary care hospital. Clinical information and gross findings were taken from the histopathology record section. Haematoxylin and Eosin stained slides were retrieved from pathology archives and light microscopic diagnosis and typing were done according to the recent WHO 2013 classification. Histochemistry and immunohistochemistry were done wherever indicated. There were a total of 93 cases of soft tissue tumors, majority were benign (82.8%) followed by malignant soft tissue tumors (11.8%), with a benign to malignant ratio of 7% and indeterminate soft tissue tumors account for 5.4%. The age distribution of cases range from 8 years -68 years with mean age of 41 years. The male to female ratio of 1.8: 1. The soft tissue tumors had predilection for extremities and head and neck. The more logical and modern histopathological classification and standard nomenclature now offers a better clinio-pathological co-relation of these tumors. The clinicomorphological evaluation is still gold standard for proper diagnosis of soft tissue tumors.
