Clinicopathological study of non-neoplastic urinary bladder lesions
Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2019, Vol 9, Issue 3
Abstract
Background: Non-neoplastic and neoplastic urinary bladder lesions constitute a diverse group of lesions with a wide spectrum of clinical and pathological lesions. Chronic non specific cystitis with histological variants like follicular, xanthogranulomatous, eosinophilic and granulomatous cystitis, malakoplakia and metaplastic changes are the most common non neoplastic lesions of urinary bladder. 5 As the incidence of non neoplastic lesions is less, the present study is undertaken to study the incidence and histopathological gamut of these lesions and to correlate them with various demographic and clinicopathological variables. Aims and Objectives: To study the histopathological patterns of non-neoplastic urinary bladder lesions and to correlate the lesions with demographic variables like age, gender, smoking, occupation and clinical variables such as size, location of lesion and focality. Materials and Methods: The present cross sectional study was conducted in the Department of Pathology, ESIC Medical College, Rajajinagar, Bangalore for a period of 6 years. Out of 100 bladder lesions there were 18 non-neoplastic lesions. These lesions were correlated with demographic and clinicopathological variables. Results: Out of 100 bladder lesions, 18 cases were non-neoplastic lesions. Among them 8 cases were chronic nonspecific inflammation and 3 were tuberculosis cases and one each case of Acute cystitis, Cystitis cystica, Radiation cystitis, Diverticulum, Malakoplakia, Urachal cyst and Xanthogranulomatous cystitis. All 3 cases of tuberculosis presented in trigone area, which was found to be statistically significant. Conclusion: The lesions of bladder run a gamut of neoplastic and non- neoplastic conditions. The incidence of Non-neoplastic lesions is less compared to neoplastic lesions. Chronic non specific cystitis forms the bulk of non neoplastic lesions
