Spectrum of Dermatological lesions in Skin Biopsies - A Histopathological Study
Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2019, Vol 9, Issue 3
Abstract
Background: Dermatologic disorders are common in many countries but the spectrum varies greatly. Various lesions afflicting the skin range from non-specific dermatoses and inflammatory diseases to neoplastic changes of various components of the skin. Aims and objectives: To describe the histopathological profile of skin lesions in biopsy samples. Materials and methods: A total of 820 skin biopsy specimens were evaluated. The biopsy specimens were fixed in 10% formalin, processed and stained for histopathological examination. Results: According to the histopathological diagnosis the skin diseases were classified into eight groups. Majority belonged to Group VI- Tumors and cysts of dermis and subcutis- 35.6%. Maximum number of cases were seen in 5th decade 19% and predominantly in males 50.5%. Conclusion: Skin conditions are among the most common health problems in India. There is a paucity of histopathology studies of skin diseases. This is because the dermato-pathology sub-specialty is poorly developed. In our study histopathological classification was used to analyse the spectrum of skin diseases.
