Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2018, Vol 5, Issue 3
Abstract
Background: Breast carcinoma is the most common cancer and the leading cause of death in females all over the world. Breast cancer is one of the most common malignancies among women in most developed and developing regions of the world with nearly a million new cases reported each year. It accounts for nearly 21% of all cancers among women worldwide. In India, breast cancer is the second most common cancer (after cervical cancer) with an estimated 115,251 new diagnosis and the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths with 53,592 breast cancer deaths in 2008. Breast cancer accounts for 22.2% of all new cancer diagnosis and 17.2% of all cancer deaths among women in India. The present study was designed to see the frequency, age, gender and morphological features of breast carcinoma in a tertiary care hospital. Methods: This was a retrospective study conducted at the Department of Pathology, shree M. P. Shah govt medical college, Jamnagar, Gujarat from March 2016 to February 2017. Histopathology reports of all the breast lumps biopsy, reported during the study period, were retrieved from the record of histopathology section of the Pathology Department. Tumor related information including biopsy type, laterality, final diagnosis; associated pathology, and skin / nipple involvement were recorded. Out of these we include only malignant breast lesions in our study. All the neoplastic lesions were classified on the basis of WHO classification of tumors of the breast. Results: A total of 147 malignant breast lesions were reported during the study period, Out of 147 reported breast malignancies, 93 were of left breast while 54 were of right breast. All cases of breast malignancies (147) were reported in female patients and none in the males. The most common histopathological subtype of breast malignancy was invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) comprising 137 cases, followed by invasive lobular carcinoma 03 cases and mucinous carcinoma 03 cases. Out of 137 cases of invasive ductal carcinoma, 53 cases shows DCIS components and 15 cases shows accompanying benign componentfibroadenosis. Conclusion: The breast malignancies are quite common in our females. Breast malignancy is more common in left breast and more common in age group 41 to 60, though breast malignancy in early age ( 3rd decade) is also increase now a days. Most common type of breast malignancy is invasive ductal carcinoma – No special type. In our study most of the patients having breast lump of more than 5 cm which suggest lack of awareness to attend hospital earlier.
