Frequency of ABO and Rh blood group among the blood donors at tertiary care hospital at western Vidarbha of Maharashtra

Abstract
The ABO and Rh are the major (clinically significant) blood group antigens. The character of the ABO blood groups is exclusively and integrally heritable, genetically determined at conception and remain fixed for life. Hence its frequency distribution follows a known pattern governed by gene transmission from generation to generation and varies with the race and geographical distribution of human being. A retrospective study carried out at Blood Bank, at the tertiary care hospital at western Vidharbha of Maharashtra. The data of voluntary as well as replacement blood donors during the year 2012 to 2016 (total 05 year) was obtained from blood bank record and data was analyzed according to age, sex and blood groups. Total 35775 blood donors were assessed. Donors belonged to the age group of 18 to 55 years with M:F ratio was 25:1. The frequency of ABO blood group in the descending order at the tertiary care teaching institute of Western Vidharbha of Maharashtra was blood group B (31.5%), followed by O (29%), A (27%). and AB (12.28%). Rh positivity was predominantly seen in 96% of the donors.
