A study on prevalence of different types of cancer in a tertiary health care centre

Abstract
Cancer remains a major public health problem with significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. This is a retrospective study, reviewed 3 year medical records of cancer patients managed at Government Tiruvarur Medical College Hospital, Tiruvarur. This study assessed the prevalence of cancer among the patients managed in this tertiary care hospital. The total number of malignancies diagnosed over the period of 3 years (1st January 2015 to 31st December 2017) were 720 cases, with increasing frequency from 150 in 2015 to 324 in 2017. Twenty eight different types of cancers were observed. Overall the cancer was more prevalent in females than in males. Cancer is more common in the age group of 51 – 60 years followed by 41 – 50 years. Oral cancer is most common of all cancers followed by breast cancer, cervical cancer and gastric cancer. This study shows that there is gradual increase in incidence of cancer among the population and there is raise of cancer incidence in females compared to males.
