Prevalence of Hepatitis B infection among blood donors at a tertiary care teaching hospital of Uttar Pradesh

Abstract
Background: Safe blood transfusion is one of the most important components of our health care system and its proper functioning prevents spread of infectious diseases. Transfusion Transmitted Infections (TTIs) are life threatening to the safety of the recipients and are the matter of concern worldwide. Aim: The present study retrospectively analyzed prevalence of Hepatitis B virus infection in blood donors from November 2009 to November 2017. Settings and Design: The study was carried out in the Blood Bank at Saraswathi Institute of Medical Sciences, Hapur, Uttar Pradesh. All tests were done using the fourth generation ELISA kit (J Mitra and Co.Pvt Ltd) which detected the presence of antibodies. Results: A total of 6982 blood donors were screened, of which 6881 (98.5%) were males and 101 (1.44%) were females. Replacement donations 6770(96.96%)) represented the majority whereas, only 212 (3.03%) donations were from the voluntary donors. Conclusion: Our study showed the prevalence of Hepatitis B virus to be 1.08% in our tertiary care teaching hospital.
