Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Surgery - Year 2018, Vol 7, Issue 2

Abstract

Aim: This study aimed to compare collagen dressings versus conventional dressings in second degree superficial burns in paediatric patients (Age 0-17 years). Methods: From august 2015 to September 2017, 40 patients who presented with second degree burns were chosen by random sampling technique, and were grouped into 2 groups consisting of 20 patients each. One group, the test group was treated with collagen dressings and the other control group was treated with conventional silver sulphadiazine and saline gauze dressings and the effects of each were compared. Result: In our study it was observed that duration taken for the wound healing is much lesser in the collagen group compared to the conventional dressings. The duration of hospital stay was less in patients treated with collagen dressing as compared to the conventional group. It was noticed that there was less pain and lower infectivity with collagen dressing. Conclusion: Collagen sheet is very useful in second-degree burns. It is well tolerated, provides multiple benefits and the overall costbenefit factor is good when compared to the conventional dressings.
