Journal Title: Journal of Evidence Based Medicine and Healthcare - Year 2014, Vol 1, Issue 8

Abstract

Obesity is becoming a serious public health issue and is related to lung dysfunction. This study was planned to assess the correlation between the pulmonary function like FEV1 and increasing BMI in young adult males. This study was undertaken in normal weight and overweight young adult males of Balagangadaranatha nagara, Mandya. The study and control groups were comprised of 120 male subjects between the age group 18-24 years randomly selected from the population of Balagangadaranatha nagara. Anthropometric measurements and spirometry was performed in all subjects. FEV1 was used as a measure of lung function. There was a significant difference in FEV1 in the study group and there was inverse relationship between FEV1 and increase in BMI.
