A Critical Survey of Portfolio Assessment

Abstract
Portfolio is a type of evaluation tool which is use to gather students’ progress during the study. Portfolio permits teachers as well as students to control their documents about an educational course. Portfolio allows students to review their previous task, revise it and submit it as the final version. It also helps teachers to measure students’ progress during the course. The purpose of this study is to introduce portfolio assessment method universally used in educational contexts. To achieve this aim, some information about portfolio such as its definition, its developing process, the types of portfolio to be used, selection of contexts, its advantages and disadvantages were discussed in depth. The results of this qualitative report show that portfolio assessment enables students to reflect their real performance, to show their weak and strong points and to observe student’s progress during the learning process, and to encourages students to take responsibility for their own learning. It is an important tool for assessment of students’ learning products and process.
