A CRITIQUE OF THE TURKISH TRANSLATIONS OF SEIN UND ZEIT

Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2016, Vol 9, Issue 46

Abstract

Martin Heidegger’s Sein und Zeit, first published in 1927, was first translated by Aziz Yardımlı in 2004 into Turkish under the title of Varlık ve Zaman. A further translation of Sein und Zeit was done later in 2008 by Kaan H. Ökten under the same title. In both translations, the German word ‘Sein’ was translated with the Turkish equivalent ‘Varlık’. However, when taken as a whole, the thought system that Heidegger formulated in his book will make it clear that the choice of Varlık as the Turkish equivalent of Sein does not serve well the aim that Heidegger pursued in writing his book. This particular study will research the purpose behind Heidegger’s use of the word Sein, with examples from his Being and Time, and ‘Varoluş’ will be suggested as a substitute for the word ‘Varlık’.
