A CROSS SECTIONAL STUDY AMONG DENTAL STUDENTS TO EVALUATE THE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT RADIATION PROTECTION AND PRACTICE IN DENTAL COLLEGES IN TAMIL NADU

Abstract

Background: Radiological examination is an integral part of dentistry. The radiation doses used for Dental imaging seem to be low relatively to medical doses but the cumulative doses are high due to repeated examination. Proper knowledge of dental students about radiation protection and practice is necessary to avoid unnecessary radiation exposure. So this study was aimed to assess the Knowledge of dental students about radiation protection and practice. Materials And Methods: The descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in the month of August 2015, among 320 dental students, Tamil Nadu. The data was analysed using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) software version 21. Result: All the participants were aware of the harmfulness of the radiation. In contrast, only 6.6% participants were aware that the Dental radiographs are not absolutely contraindicated for pregnant women. 96.6% of participants have experienced radiographic error among which 65% of the participants commonly experienced cone cut and 89.7% of the participants will adhere to radiation protection protocol at the time of private clinical practice. Conclusion:This study shows that Dental students have lack of knowledge about radiation protection and practice. So, the need for education and the training of Dental students in the principles of radiation protection and practice is even more compelling than in the past. Students should be trained about the criteria for advising Dental radiographs to minimize unwanted radiation exposure. The use of lead aprons, thyroid collars and barrier should be made mandatory in Dental colleges. The position Distance rule should be followed by the students to ensure their safety and they should strictly adhere to Radiation Protection protocols in their curriculum.
