A cross sectional study on electronic device addiction among youth in an urban area, Chennai

Abstract

Context:Addiction to electronic devices are now emerging as the leading form of behavioral addiction especially among youth. Smart phone addiction is now viewed as a potential public health threat and hence the quantum of the problem needs to be studied.Aims:To assess the pattern of mobile phone addiction and associated factors and also to assess the concomitant usage of various forms of electronic devices among youth in the urban community Settings and Design: The study is a cross sectional community based study in Sanjeevarayanpet, urban field practice area of Stanley medical college ,Chennai.Methods and Material: A total of 249 people of age group 15-35 years were interviewed with the pre tested structured questionnaire. NIMHAN’s criteria was used to assess the risk of mobile phone addiction among youth in the community. Results and conclusion:According to Nimhans criteria for mobile phone addiction 41.4% were at risk of addiction to mobile phones and 58.6% were average mobile phone users. Among the various concomitant electronic devices used by the mobile users, TV occupies the first placewith 92.4% in this study and next is desktop (39.4%).Rinxiety, amount spent on mobile per month, sleep deprivation and day without phone were significant predictors of the presence of mobile phone addiction among youth.Both families and health care workers need to be vigilant on the possibility of cell phone addiction among the youth and offer them behaviour change communication to promote constructive use of mobile phones.
