A cross sectional study on the prevalence of lower limb amputations and associated etiologies among patients attending government institute of rehabilitation medicine
Journal Title: Stanley Medical Journal - Year 2017, Vol 4, Issue 2
Abstract
Introduction Lower extremity amputations are costly and debilitating complications in patients with diabetes and accidents. Our aim is to evaluate the prevalence of lower extremity amputations among patients, who got admitted for prosthesis fitting at Government Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, Chennai. Early identification of risk factors for diabetic foot ulcers and awareness program about road safety measures will reduce the burden of major lower limb amputations. Methods This is a cross sectional study on lower extremity amputations in patients with prosthesis by reviewing the medical records of patients admitted for rehabilitation for the period of 3 years from 2014 to 2016 at Government Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine (GIRM), Madras Medical College, Chennai. Parameters like age, sex. etiology were assessed. Results Prevalence of lower limb amputation was comparatively higher in male than female population with most common etiology being diabetes and accidents.. Based on the analysis, primarily affected age group in diabetic population is 51 to 60 years and 61-70 years. Accident is the second most common etiology which primarily affects the younger age groups. Conclusion These findings indicate an increase in rate of major amputations in diabetic population, which suggests an implementation of guidelines for the treatment and to identify the risk factors for diabetic foot ulcers. Road and train safety measures should be focused and public should be educated on hazards of not following the prescribed safety measures.
