A deep cultural and historical mark: France and the national project of Romania
Journal Title: Codrul Cosminului - Year 2011, Vol 17, Issue 2
Abstract
Through this study, we tried to present and to briefly analyze the influence of the French national model on the Romanian national project, in the era of modernization of our society, in the nineteenth century. The theoretical premises of our analysis can be formulated as follows: a. nationalism is a recent reality that was formulated and asserted in a close relation with the modernization; b. nationalism is not something particular as political ideology, but at the same time, it takes different forms and aspects, being more useful to speak of nationalism with features and specific manifestations; c. nationalism has its roots in Western Area, in the Age of Enlightenment, and spread across the continent. We can not speak of constitutive elements of nationalism, as an ideology, that are fundamentally different, but of different forms of manifestations. In this case, we can not agree with the "Hans Kohn dichotomy" and, especially, with its ethical and moral implications; d. European order has been changed in its essential details alongside the appearance and development of national states, and it necessarily imposed the national evolution as a condition of acceptance. Apart from manner in which – often, by transculturation and acculturation, within the meaning of cultural anthropology – France and its national model exerted an influence on the modern Romanian society, we should note its direct and pragmatic political action, by imposing of some elements belonging to the French national program in this region. In a personal and creative manner, Romanians have understood and accepted the nation-state model and the order based on it. The models’ influences that they have adopted and accepted – the French occupying a privileged position, at least until the last quarter of the nineteenth century – were, undoubtedly, extremely important. However, these models had some distinguished features. We can evaluate, through the historical comparative research, to what extent each of these models – the French first – was used and how it concretely influenced the realities of our country; it is certain that local traditions and customs, the immediate realities of everyday life have given of what we call today the national character.
