A dentist who deserves a medal – dental surgeons at the Olympic Games and on postage stamps
Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2010, Vol 63, Issue 2
Abstract
Introduction: Participation of dental surgeons or students of dentistry in the Olympic Games seems to be quite an interesting aspect of the history of dentistry. Unfortunately, it is next to impossible to give an exact number of dentists from all over the world participating in these most prestigious of sports events. The number of practitioners who became Olympic medallists can be estimated at about twenty so far. Aim of the study: To familiarise the general public with dentists who achieved exemplary sporting successes besides their professional work. Selected biographies are presented in two parts. Material and methods: Part I is devoted to lives of dentists – Olympic champions – who were depicted on postage stamps (Elżbieta Duńska-Krzesińska, Erhard Keller, Kertin Palm, Alvin Kraenzlein), while part II introduces all Polish dentists representing our country in the Olympics (Adam Smelczyński, Joachim Karliczek, Zygmunt Kiszkurno, Mieczysław Wilczewski). Conclusion: Nowadays when sport has turned professional Olympic medals for dental practitioners seem more than rare. Thus, it is even more rewarding to discover that some of our colleagues are successful in amateur competitions. Bożena Kędzierska, a dentist based in Pułtusk, is a proud example of a practitioner who has been awarded 10 gold medals during the latest World Medical and Health Games. It appears that both sport and dentistry represent a matching combination.
