A design method for anatomical hip joint endoprostheses

Abstract
To solve the hip joint prosthesis’s aseptic loosening after THR (total hip replacement) and to adapt for the requirement of individual endoprosthesis’ rapid automatic design and manufacture, a hip joint prosthesis is designed according to the anatomical shape of patient’s femoral marrow cavity and the replacement requirement based on the combination of medical CT technique, computer aided design and finite element analysis method. During analysis of the endoprosthesis, the 3-D finite element model of the femur was established by ANSYS and the femoral material parameters were obtained. The quantitative descriptions on anisotropy and inhomogeneity of the femoral material were realized by the self-developed software. The contact of the customized hip endoprosthesis: the femur system was simulated by ANSYS. The stress, strain, distribution and displacement were analyzed and contrasted before and after operation under the load of walking gait in the system. Results indicate that it is feasible to checkout the rationality of the design by comparing the stress distribution in the femur before replacement, and the extent of stress-shielding and fretting caused by the replacement is determined quantificationally. The presented method can be used to optimize the design of custom-made hip prostheses and evaluate the long-term stability of endoprosthesis after operation.
