Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2015, Vol 8, Issue 41
Abstract
The main aim of this research is to develop the optimism level of mothers having disabled children through group guidance. A semi-experimental model with pre-test and post-test was used in the study. The Optimism Inventory which was developed by Balcı and Yılmaz (2002) was used. 16 mothers who wanted to participate in group guidance sessions voluntarily were selected according to their points in the optimism inventory and their socio-demographic characteristics (age, education etc.). Both experimental and control groups have included 8 mothers. It was found that there was no significant difference between the mothers participating group guidance and mothers in control group in terms of average points in the post tests results but that there was a significant difference between the points of the mothers participating in pre and post tests in terms of optimism level. As a result of applied group guidance for 8 weeks, it was observed that the group guidance increased the level of optimism in the participants in the experiment group. Similar guidance practices that will include other members of the family can be suggested.
