A histopathological study of spectrum of gastrointestinal tract lesions: Two year study

Abstract
Background: Gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is an important site for wide variety of lesions which include congenital, inflammatory and neoplastic conditions. H. Pylori has been implicated in varied range of gastric lesions including Gastritis, peptic ulcer, Gastric Carcinoma, Gastric lymphoma. Gastrointestinal stromal tumour occurs anywhere in gastrointestinal tract but most often in the wall of stomach. Adenocarcinoma is most common all over gastrointestinal tract. Aims and Objectives: To study the histopathological features in various gastrointestinal tract lesion, To study the distribution of lesion according to age and sex. To differentiate lesion-Benign or Malignant. Material and Methods: The present study was undertaken in department of pathology, PDU medical college, Rajkot for 2 years. All the 180 specimen of Gastrointestinal tract lesions, clinically diagnosed, submitted to the department of pathology, P.D.U. Medical College, Rajkot. All the Specimen were sent in 10% formalin, processed, stained and examined under light microscope. Summary and Conclusion: In Present Study Adenocarcinoma was most common malignancy found all over gastrointestinal tract, GIST was most common in Stomach and Small Intestine and MALT oma was most common in Stomach. Early detection of lesions by biopsy with histopathological examination is helpful for early and batter treatment. Gastroinestinal tract lesions are detected late as patients are either asymptomatic or present with mild, non-specific symptoms in early stage of disease.
