Melanotic neuroectodermal tumour of infancy: Does cytology give a diagnostic clue?

Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2019, Vol 9, Issue 1

Abstract

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumour of infancy (MNTI) is defined as a locally aggressive, rapidly growing tumour consisting of biphasic population of small neuroblast-like and larger melanin-producing epithelioid cells. Most common site affected is head and neck region. We herein report a case of a four months old male having MNTI, diagnosed on cytology. We discuss its cytomorphology, histopathology and IHC. FNAC diagnosis of MNTI is challenging but not impossible. A systematic literature review was conducted by searching the PubMed and National Centre for Biotechnology Information database. Statistical analysis used: Microsoft Excel 2010. To the best of authors’ knowledge, this is the fifth case report of cytological diagnosis of MNTI in the English literature.
