A study of fine needle aspiration and fine needle non-aspiration techniques in thyroid swellings
Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2018, Vol 8, Issue 2
Abstract
Aim: Comparison of fine needle aspiration cytology and fine aspiration non-aspiration cytology techniques when used for thyroid lesions. Materials and Methods: In all 100 cases of thyroid lesions undertaken, FNAC as well as FNNAC techniques were used, to study the lesion. All the needle sampling in both procedures were done by single operator. The samples were checked cytologically and studied using five parameters which include amount of cellular material, background, retention of appropriate architecture, degree of cellular trauma and degree of cellular degeneration. Results and Conclusion: After study of FNAC and FNNAC procedures on the basis of the scores, greater number of diagnostically superior samples were obtained by FNAC technique, while as FNAC yielded a greater number of diagnostically adequate smears. The number of unsuitable smears were obtained more by FNNAC technique.
