Morphology and hormone receptor status in carcinoma breast following neoadjuvant chemotherapy: A descriptive study

Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2018, Vol 8, Issue 1

Abstract

Background: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy in carcinoma breast followed by surgical resection presents the pathologist with the responsibility of commenting both on the diagnosis of the residual tumour, if present, and also on the changes caused by the therapy. A knowledge of morphological changes attributable to chemotherapy is important in reporting such cases. This study aims to assess the changes in morphology and hormone receptor status following neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Methods: This descriptive study included thirty one cases of carcinoma breast who had undergone neoadjuvant chemotherapy in our institution, and the changes in morphology and hormone receptor status between pre-chemotherapy trucut specimen and post-chemotherapy surgical specimen were analysed. Results: Among gross findings, the commonest were residual mass and fibrosis. Tumour following therapy showed reduced cellularity, with the most frequent cytological changes being increase in cell size and cytoplasmic vacuolations. Hormone receptor status did not show a significant change following chemotherapy in our study. Conclusion: Tumour intrinsic characteristics need to be differentiated from changes related to treatment for a correct assessment of post-chemotherapy carcinoma breast specimens.
