Distribution of ABO, rhesus blood groups and transfusion transmitted diseases in a blood bank of a tertiary care hospital: A one year study

Abstract

Background: The study of the distribution of ABO blood group and rhesus blood group is significant for the genetic studies as well as for medico legal issues and for the smooth and efficient working of the blood bank of hospital. The screening of the blood for transmission transmitted diseases is essential as recipients of blood and blood products can acquire life-threatening infections. Objective: To determine the distribution of ABO and rhesus blood groups in donors in a blood bank and to document the percentage of various transmission transmitted diseases. Methods and Materials: The retrospective study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital from 1 July 2015 to 1 July 2016. The total number of subjects studied was 2264 which were found to be eligible according to the NACO guidelines the ABO and Rhesus grouping was done and data were collected from the blood bank records. The samples of donors were screen for various transfusion transmitted diseases by using various commercially available kits. Results: Of total 2264 subjects studied the most common blood group in our region was B (39.7%) followed by O (28.9%) and A (23.3%) and AB (7.95%) Rhesus positive were 95.62% and Rhesus negative were 4.38%. The most common TTD was hepatitis B followed by syphilis, Hepatitis C and HIV. Conclusion: The most common blood group in our region was B and the most common transfusion transmitted disease was hepatitis B.
