A cytomorphological analysis of oral mucosal lesions in tobacco users

Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2018, Vol 6, Issue 3

Abstract

Aims: 1. To study the effect of tobacco use on oral mucosa 2. To analyse the efficacy of exfoliative cytology as a screening procedure to diagnose various buccal mucosal lesions at an early stage. Methods and Materials: 50 subjects were studied, who were chronic tobacco users. Exfoliative cytology was done and smears prepared and stained with papanicolau stain. Various lesions were observed. Results: The cytomorphological smears showed frank malignant cells, dysplastic cells and inflammation in 13%, 8% and 29% of cases respectively. Conclusions: From this study, it is concluded that tobacco causes various oral lesions from inflammatory to frank malignancy. Exfoliative cytology is an effective screening procedure to diagnose these lesions at an early stage so that patients at risk for malignancy can be treated appropriately.
