Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2017, Vol 4, Issue 2

Abstract

Background: Worldwide carcinomas account for nearly 95% of all cases of lung cancer, whereas sarcomas and lymphomas account for most of the remainder. Aims and Objectives: To Study role of cytopathology in the diagnosis of respiratory neoplasm at tertiary health care. Methodology: After approval from the institutional ethical committee this cross-sectional study was carried out in the Department of Pathology at the tertiary health care center during the two year period i.e. January 2015 to January 2017. In the two years all the patients who were suspected for the lung neoplasm were. The cytology later on the Biopsy samples were taken in each case. Here the diagnostic accuracy of cytology was confirmed by Histology and the Statistical analysis done by MEDCALC software. Sensitivity, Specificity, Positive Predictive Value, Negative Predictive Value was calculated. Result: The majority of the patients were Male- 69.14%, Female-30.86%. The most common diagnosis on cytology was Non-Small cell lung carcinoma was 30.86%, Adeno Carcinoma -18.52%, Squamous cell carcinoma -14.81%, Adenosqaumous Carcinoma -8.64%, Squamous papilloma -13.58%, Adenoma -8.64%, Mix -4.94%. Sensitivity in 95% CI was- 94.83% (85.62% to 98.92%), Specificity- 82.61 % (61.22% to 95.05%), Positive Predictive Value- 93.22% (84.92% to 97.11%), Negative Predictive Value- 86.36 % (67.44% to 95.09%). Conclusion: It can be concluded from our study that Lung cytology was having high Sensitivity and Specificity so this comparatively very safe method should be employed for the routine screening of lung neoplasm and early treatment.
