A historiographical, historiosophical and pedagogical discourse about the national character of Poles from the turn of the 19th century to the 20th century

Journal Title: Przegląd Historyczno-Oświatowy - Year 2018, Vol 0, Issue 3

Abstract

Issues of the mentality and properties of national character have been topi- cal in the literature, mainly in the historical and political journalism of modern times. An important feature of the Polish historiography and historiosophy of the 19th century and the early 20th century was the discussion about the Polish nation- al character. The diagnoses of the national character of Poles formulated at that time, most often unfavorable, were aimed at inspiring the desired and expected educational mission in this field. The path towards eradicating those national de- fects was supposed to lead from self-discovery to individual and social (collec- tive) improvement.
