Abstract
In Transcarpathia bilingualism is a natural phenomenon. Due to the minority position of the local Hungarian people, they are frequently forced to use either surrounding language in everyday communication. The common usage of the Ukrainian or Russian languages can be observed in the mother tongue use by the speakers: they often employ second language elements in the course of mother tongue communication, which soon adapt to the sound system of the Hungarian language, while they become such phenomena that their foreign character can almost never be noticed by the laymen. A substantial part of the Eastern Slavic lexical elements which naturalized in the Transcarpathian Hungarian dialects have already been recorded scientifically. However, a thorough linguistic examination of these words has not been made yet. Thus, we have almost no information about shape variations of some loanwords, or the parallel borrowings of words from the Russian and Ukrainian languages and the causes of these phenomena. The present study deals with the semantic modifications of the Eastern Slavic lexical elements which have been strongly rooted in the Hungarian dialects of Transcarpathia. It also gives an overview of the adaptation process of the Eastern Slavic lexical elements in the Hungarian dialects of Transcarpathia. The first part describes the cases of semantic narrowing in meaning, while the other part deals with those aspects which are connected with the semantic broadening in meaning of the words. This study is based on a survey carried out with a sample of 342 individuals. I would like to examine shape variations of Eastern Slavic loanwords which naturalized in the Hungarian dialects of Transcarpathia and the phonetic reasons of the development of these shape variations.
