A large Intradural Intramedullary Pilocytic Astrocytoma of Spinal Cord: Complete Resection with Improved Neurology

Journal Title: Nepal Journal of Neuroscience - Year 2014, Vol 11, Issue 1

Abstract

Intramedullary tumors of spinal cord are rare. We present a case of Pilocytic astrocytoma of spinal cord in a 9-year-old girl who presents with tetraparesis. Although the ideal management of astrocytoma of spinal cord is still unclear, with advanced microsurgical technique and availability of neurophysiological monitoring, total excision of the tumor should be the goal. In this case gross total resection was achieved without intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring. Functional status improved from modifi ed McCormick IV preoperatively to grade III in 6 weeks.
