A LINE FEEDING SYSTEM DECIDING AGV NUMBERS AND STOCK AMOUNT NEAR LINES

Journal Title: Endüstri Mühendisliği - Year 2019, Vol 30, Issue 2

Abstract

In a company operating in the durable consumer goods sector and producing washing machines, the materials are kept in an interim stock area called supermarket before being sent to the assembly lines. Since there is no specific line feeding system, the materials may be sent later or earlier than the time of use. While producton stops due to late shipment, due to the early shipment, excessive stock is accumulated near the lines. The aim of the study is “Designing the material flow between storage and assembly lines in a way to reduce production downtime and increase process and flow efficiency in the supermarket”. In the light of the material feeding studies in the literature, a three-stage heuristic approach which makes routing, loading and scheduling decisions has been developed. Using these heuristics, two alternative solutions have been developed in which (i) the minimum possible number of automated guided vehicles (AGV) for certain stock quantities and (ii) the minimum possible stock quantities under the specified AGV number constraint. Solution has also been tested with a simulation method and it has been observed that the company gets significant improvements both in terms of AGV number and stock amounts compared to the methods used before the study.
