A METHOD FOR THE OPTIMIZATION OF THE SHIP'S SPEED DISTRIBUTION

Journal Title: Biuletyn Instytutu Morskiego - Year 1994, Vol 21, Issue 2

Abstract

In the high developed countries many efforts have been undertaken for the rationalization of fuel consumption. Such efforts occurred also in the shipping area. A strong competition has caused an increase of interest in methods enabling reduction of fuel consumption and costs. One of the methods consists in the best choice of speed distribution for the ship travelling with the economical average speed during the entire trip. In this case one may use a well known speed optimization method, often find in literature, which is based on the variational calculation along with an approximation procedure. But this method is very complicated and inconvenient for applications. Hereby, this paper presents a different, original method for optimizing the ship's speed distribution, which is based on simple algebraic and function extremum calculations. Comparative calculation have shown that it is possible to achieve approx. a 5% reduction of fuel consumption in comparison to a ship travelling with a constant speed. In the extreme cases, the reduction of fuel consumption may even amount 10%.
