A Model for Pottery Material Processing
Journal Title: Поволжская Археология - Year 2018, Vol 2, Issue 24
Abstract
The subject of the present paper is an exemplary model for the processing of the mass archaeological material – the pottery. For this aim, a typological system has been developed and it consists of Whole Vessels Typology (WVT) and Pottery Fragment Typology (PFT). During the pottery processing by the two typologies, an attempt for relating the whole vessels’ data with the fragmentary material was made. This gives the opportunity to make a connection between certain pottery details – like different types of rims, decoration, handles and bottoms – with certain types of the respective categories of vessels. In addition, separate types and subtypes of the PFT are very well dated in a number of settlements and separate layers in them which let us relate the fragmentary material with WVT and gives a chance for a precise dating not only of certain types and subtypes, but entire typological lines. This way the pottery becomes а reliable dating material for the medieval settlements of the Byzantine cultural circle.
