A NEUROLINGUISTIC CLASSIFICATION OF APHASIA
Journal Title: Acta Neuropsychologica - Year 2003, Vol 1, Issue 2
Abstract
Purpose. Data collected over 25 years of research and therapy of persons with aphasia has made it possible to propose in this paper a classification scheme of aphasia. Contribution. Two basic types of aphasia are distinguished: (1) paradigmatic and (2) syntagmatic. In addition, three subtypes of paradigmatic aphasia are discriminated: (a) phonemic, (b) lexical, and (c) semantic, and four subtypes of syntagmatic aphasia: (a) phonotactic, (b) morphological, (c) syntactic, and (d) textual. The paradigmatic-phonemic aphasia is further divided into acoustic and kinemic forms, taking into account Baudouin de Courtenay's notion of the phoneme. A more detailed characterization of aphasic disorders is also given with reference to Luria's approach. Special emphasis is given to the noun-pronoun ratio observed in aphasic narratives, in contrast to the proportion of nouns and verbs usually taken under consideration. Conclusions. It is argued that only the traditional speech zone plays a crucial role in processing language itself. Its anterior part seems to be concerned with the sequential processing of linguistic information, the posterior part with selection of verbal units. Particular subtypes of aphasia appear to result from disruptions of individual subsystems of language: phonological, morphological, lexical, and syntactic respectively.
