A Qualitative Study on Personal Skills of Children with Multiple Disabilities in Relation to their Parental Involvement

Abstract
The present study aimed to identify the parental involvement in training, personal skills to their children with multiple disabilities. The investigator selected the sample using purposive sampling technique and qualitative method. There were 30 children with multiple disabilities, both male and female having cerebral palsy with mental retardation in the age range of 6 years to 19 years of their mother and grandparents participated in the present study. The investigator assessed each child’s present level of functioning using the Functional Assessment Checklist for Programming. All the parent involvement were assessed using the Parental Involvement Questionnaire and survey form, which includes regular support, concentration on appropriate training, spending enough time, teaching professionally to their children. The result revealed that there is a lack of regular support, no adequate time spends for training, lack of concentration, poor or no professional training, were reported by them to their children to achieve their personal skills. The results were analysed qualitatively. The present study concludes that there is a need to develop a training manual on personal skills in children with multiple disabilities to train parents.
