A Rare Case Of Congenital Absence Of Right Pulmonary Artery
Journal Title: Journal of Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences - Year 2015, Vol 1, Issue 1
Abstract
Unilateral absence of pulmonary artery(UAPA) is a rare congenital anomaly with estimated prevalence of around 1 in 200,000 individuals.1 The first case of UAPA was reported by Fraentzel in 1868.2About 75% of the patients with left sided pulmonary artery agenesis have associated congenital cardiac anomalies. In comparison, occurrence of associated congenital cardiac anomalies are rarely seen in patients with right-sided pulmonary artery agenesis.1 The most frequent accompanying cardiovascular anomalies include Tetralogy of Fallot or septal defects. Patients with absence of the right pulmonary artery may be asymptomatic or may develop recurrent pulmonary infection, hemoptysis, or bronchiectasis.3,4,5 Although some patients with isolated UAPA are completely asymptomatic, others may have severe pulmonary hypertension and congestive heart failure.5 Only few cases of unilateral pulmonary artery agenesis have been reported from India.6-8 We report an incidentally discovered case of congenital absence of right main pulmonary artery who presented with left lower lobe pneumonia and fracture shaft of right radius and distal shaft of left humerus after road traffic accident.
