A Rare Case of Malignant Mixed Mullerian Tumour of the Uterus

Journal Title: Indian Obstetrics & Gynaecology - Year 2017, Vol 7, Issue 4

Abstract

Introduction: Malignant mixed mullerian tumour is the commonest variant of uterine sarcomas. Uterine sarcomas are aggressive and carry a poor prognosis. Very often they are detected following hysterectomy though endometrial biopsy or curettage is sometimes suggestive. So, the diagnosis of these malignancies can come up suddenly and unexpectedly. Case report: A 63-year-old lady was referred with a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma of the endometrium. She underwent staging laparotomy at our Institute. The final histopathology report however showed carcinosarcoma of the uterus. The adjuvant treatment for carcinosarcoma is chemotherapy with Ifosfamide being the drug of choice, whereas the treatment for adenocarcinoma is radiation. Conclusion: This case report highlights the fact that a diagnosis can change after surgery even though a preoperative biopsy has been taken and thoroughly reviewed. This can have profound bearing on adjuvant treatment.
