IMPORTANCE OF DEVELOPING A NEW MODIFIED HIGH RISK PREGNANCY SCORING SYSTEM

Journal Title: Indian Obstetrics & Gynaecology - Year 2017, Vol 7, Issue 1

Abstract

Objective: The present study is an attempt to propose a new modified high risk pregnancy scoring system incorporating both maternal and foetal risk factors by assigning a numerical score to each woman and to assess the effectiveness of this system in identifying and hence reducing perinatal mortality. Methodology: All antenatal patients attending the outpatient in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology were interviewed, after informed consent. Those who fulfilled the required criteria were grouped in three categories; low risk (Group A) with numerical risk score 0-3, high risk (Group B) with score 4-6 and extremely high risk (Group C) with score ≥7. Patients were followed till delivery, maternal and neonatal outcomes were assessed between the groups. Results: Total 1200 patients were included in the study and were given numerical score depending upon their risk factors. Risk factors like foetal complications, and various other maternal complications which were not present in previous scoring system were also included and were given appropriate scores. Perinatal outcomes in terms of maternal and foetal well-being were analyzed and were found better in low risk women compared to high risk women Conclusion: Modified high risk pregnancy scoring system not only provides a good tool to recognize potential pregnancy complications besides being an educational tool. On the other hand wise usage of the scoring system is essential as these scores are not absolute and that there may be areas of overlap between the various groups.
