Journal Title: Indian Obstetrics & Gynaecology - Year 2017, Vol 7, Issue 1

Abstract

Swyer syndrome is a very rare disorder, characterized by failure of sex gonads to develop into either tests or ovary. The gonads are usually replaced by fibrous streaks. Affected individuals have external and internal genitalia of female type and XY (male)karyotype i.e. they have female phenotype and male genotype. The assigned sex is unambiguously female. Patients get premature gonadal failure and usually present in adolescence with primary amenorrhoea and lack of secondary sex characteristiics. Gonadectomy is advised in view of high incidence of gonadoblastoma or germ cell carcinoma. Treatment is in the form of hormone replacement therapy. Ovum donation is the only option if she wishes to conceive. Here, we present a case report of one such married woman who came to us seeking fertility service We performed gonadectomy on her after counselling. She was administered sex hormones. She conceived through ovum donation. Pregnancy continued till term and she delivered a healthy baby. Also, she could successfully lactate.
