A RECYCLABLE PACKAGING WASTE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM DESIGN
Journal Title: Endüstri Mühendisliği - Year 2015, Vol 26, Issue 2
Abstract
The subject of this study, which is conducted with the collaboration of Çankaya Municipality, is to build a system helping the decision makers to make decisions about packaging waste management. The purpose is to maximize the amount of packaging waste while minimizing the cost of collection and decomposition of packaging waste. In order to achieve this purpose, four different alternatives are suggested for collection and decomposition of packaging waste. Bahçelievler, Yukarı Bahçelievler, and Emek are chosen as a pilot region to evaluate these alternatives. For all alternatives, experimental design, fuzzy number, and mixture design methods are used to forecast the potential packaging waste amounts to be collected. Plus, the most appropriate collection units and the locations and capacity of these units are determined. While set covering and assignment problems were used to determine the location of collection units, forecasted packaging waste amounts were used to set the capacity of these units. Besides, all investment and operational costs are calculated for each alternative and the alternatives are compared according to their total costs, profits, and the increase in the collected packaging waste amount. It is observed that all the alternatives result in better solutions compared to the current system.
