A RESEARCH ON TOURIST PERCEPTIONS FOR THE ROLES OF TOURIST GUIDES IN SAFEGUARDING INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE

Abstract
Intangible cultural heritage is an unprecedented practice formed by the lifestyles of society.This dimension of the cultural heritage has been protected by being transferred and being maintained.Any kind of cultural practices have the qualification as a tourism product in the sector of tourism. The reason of this situation is the close relations of tourists’ interest into different local cultures. Tourist guides, in the sector of tourism, are responsible for getting the tourists’ demands of experiencing different cultures met. Tourist guides strive for making a claim to protect the cultural values and maintain them as a neccessity of their profession. Transferring of the cultural information and experience performed by tourist guides may ensure tourists to approach the cultural values in a sensitive manner. In the study, the roles of tourist guides in protecting the cultural heritage and perception of tourists’ towards these roles have been tried to be revealed. In this scope, questionnaire for tourists who joined guided tours was conducted. In this study, acquired findings subjected to factor analysis. With the factor analysis, tourist guides’ encouraging tourists to have positive attitute on intangible cultural heritage values by means of fulfilling “interpretative role”, “intercultural mediation role” and “transmission of cultural knowledge role” came to light. In addition to this, the research findings shows that tourists generally perceive their guides as a “promoter of culture”. Furthermore, study findings reflects that tourists see tourist guides as an important tool to get information and experience about intangible cultural heritage.
