A REVIEW ON VULNERABLE PLANT SHATI - Hedychium spicatum

Abstract
Hedychium spicatum Buch. Ham (Fam: Zingiberaceae) is commonly known as Spiked ginger lily, found in Himalaya and kumayun region. It is a plant species native of china. It is perinnnial herb with aromatic odour. Its rhizomes and essential oil are mainly used for medicinal properties. It has been used in treatment of various conditions since ancient days and conatin references in our classics. Traditionally, the rhizomes are used in the treatment of respiratory disorders, fevers, snake bite, diarrhoea, vomiting, skin and eye diseases. It has properties like anti inflammatory, hypoglycaemic , tranquilizer, hypotensive, anti asthamatic, antispasmodic, CNS depressant, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antifungal, pediculicidal and cytotoxic activities from them some are also proved in human trials like in asthma and eosinophilia. H. spicatum plant has many properties and needs further study to prove its effect but now days this plant declared vulnerable by IUCN due to excessive unscientific harvestaton. This paper give detail literature review on its classical references, uses, pharmacognosy, pharmacological study, clinical trials and toxicity study.
