A Scoping Review of Stigmatization in Gaming Disorder

Journal Title: Medicine and Philosophy - Year 2024, Vol 45, Issue 24

Abstract

This scoping review examines domestic and international research on the stigmatization associated with gaming disorder, exploring its characteristics, causes, effects, and interventions. Ten themes of gaming disorder stigma were identified: holistic stigma, emphasis on danger, the shift from "stigmatization" to "destigmatization", media reporting biases, technological panic and social control, cognitive divergences, biases and deficiencies, social exclusion and discrimination, barriers to seeking help, mental health issues, and intervention recommendations for reducing gaming disorder stigma. A model for the formation of gaming disorder stigma was proposed based on these themes. Future research should aim to improve the quality of research on gaming disorder stigmatization, broaden the scope of research topics and populations, and strengthen the study of stigma formation mechanisms and the development of intervention strategies.
