A Simple Slide Test to Assess Grades of Erythrocyte Aggregation in Acute ST-Elevated Myocardial Infarction and Its Prognostic Significance
Journal Title: Scholars Journal of Applied Medical Sciences - Year 2016, Vol 4, Issue 7
Abstract
Erythrocytes are involved in a developingthrombus or clotformation.Increasedendothelialadherence of red blood cells with endothelium by increase adhesive proteins has been observed. The causesthateffect EAAT include proteinsof acute-phaseresponseandchangesinthe phospholipid compositionoferythrocytemembrane especially in a case of hyperlipidemia. The aim is tostudy erythrocyteaggregation and adhesiveness by asimpleslidetestinsubjects with acuteST-elevatedmyocardial infarction (STEMI) in predicting the outcome within 1week. Fifty patientsofacuteSTEMIwhocametotheICCUofGovernment Royapettah Hospitalwere includedinthe study.Subjectswith onsetofchestpain within 6hrs, with retrosternalchestpainpersistingformorethan30 min andwithST segmentelevation more than 1mm in limb leads and more than 2mm in chest leads inat leasttwo contiguous ECGleadswereincludedinthestudy.Citratedbloodwassubjectedto simpleslidetestandStainedsmears wereexamined under400Χ andgraded into fourgrades. ‘P’ value between the GradesofRBCaggregationandthe prognosisof the patients with STEMI was <0.05.EAATisa simple bedside slide testfor erythrocyte aggregation, whichindirectly finds outthe presenceandproportionof inflammation.Thistest also hasthe potentialto assesstheprognosisofSTEMI patients. Itcanalsobeusedas ascreeningtestfor patients with STEMI to find outhigh-riskindividualssothatnecessary interventions (like PCI)couldbe adopted. Keywords:Erythrocytes, myocardial infarction, EAAT
