Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Surgery - Year 2018, Vol 6, Issue 2

Abstract

Background: The role of serum lipids in the etiology of cholelithiasis is very important and in cholesterol gall stones serum lipids are found altered. Various studies have shown an association between gallstones and abnormal lipid levels. Aim: To establish if there is an association between the lipid profile and presence of gallstones. Material and Methods: Total 50 patients with cholelithiasis and 50 controls in the age group of 30-70 years were taken for the study. Serum triglyceride levels and serum HDL levels were determined by commercially available enzymatic colorimetric test and compared between case and control groups. Results: A total of 8 (16%) individuals among control group had serum triglycerides >150 mg/dl which was less as compared to 24% among cases group and but the difference was not significant. The serum HDL levels in control group were less as compared to cases group but the difference was not significant. Conclusion: The present study demonstrates that the cholelithiasis is more prevalent in females (72%) as against (28%) in males. However, differences in serum triglyceride and HDL levels between cases and controls were not significant.
